MAY 3 – WORLD PRESS FREEDOM DAY
Every year on May 3, the global community celebrates World Press Freedom Day. This date was officially proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1993 to mark the anniversary of the Windhoek Declaration. The primary purpose of this day is to reaffirm the fundamental principles of press freedom and to assess the state of the media worldwide.
Unfettered access to information plays a vital role in social progress and addressing key development challenges. For future diplomats and journalists, this day highlights the importance of professional responsibility and objectivity. The work of the media not only reports on events but also fosters international understanding and trust, serving as a «soft power» tool in modern diplomacy.
As part of the celebrations, UNESCO annually awards the World Press Freedom Prize to recognize significant contributions to the field. The day also provides a platform for professional discussions and conferences aimed at protecting the rights of journalists and improving the information environment. Observing this day helps young specialists better understand their role in shaping a peaceful and open dialogue between nations.
