MAY 8 – WORLD RED CROSS AND RED CRESCENT DAY
Established in 1863, the International Red Cross was created as the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement to promote humanitarian cooperation, security, and sustainable development for the sake of global peace. This international movement encompasses the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), and 192 national societies worldwide, including the National Red Crescent Society of Turkmenistan. As is well known, May 8th is celebrated annually around the world to mark the birthday of Jean Henri Dunant, the Swiss humanist, social activist, and the first-ever recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize.
As one of the oldest humanitarian public organizations in our country, the National Red Crescent Society of Turkmenistan actively participates in the socio-economic reforms being implemented in the new historical era. The Society carries out extensive work in areas such as:
Ensuring the social protection of citizens;
Protecting public health;
Strengthening the status of the family institution;
Educating the younger generation in the spirit of the Turkmen people’s finest traditions—mercy, empathy, and lending a helping hand.
By fulfilling its noble humanitarian mission, the National Society worthily represents our country within the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
The National Red Crescent Society of Turkmenistan, founded in 1926, has remained steadfast in its commitment to the goals of humanity, goodwill, and justice—values passed down by our ancestors. This year, the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the National Red Crescent Society of Turkmenistan is being celebrated in high levels. One hundred years is not just a historical date; it is a long journey filled with humanitarianism, sincere assistance, and loyalty to the ideals of compassion. The centenary of the Red Crescent Society is a celebration for every individual who stands ready to extend a helping hand.
