“TURKMENISTAN–UZBEKISTAN: NEW PROSPECTS FOR STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP” – ROUND TABLE MEETING
Independent and permanently Neutral Turkmenistan is actively pursuing the development of relations with neighboring countries in Central Asia for the sake of regional peace, security, and sustainable development. One of Turkmenistan’s strategic partners, distinguished by its multifaceted and mutually beneficial cooperation, is the Republic of Uzbekistan. The collaboration between two countries strengthens year by year. An example of this is the establishment of a free trade zone on the border between Turkmenistan and the Republic of Uzbekistan. This bilateral cooperation is not limited to economic interests but also covers other sectors.
As part of this cooperation, on October 9, 2025, a round table meeting titled “Turkmenistan–Uzbekistan: New Prospects for Strategic Partnership” was held at the Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan. The event brought together experts from the Scientific Center for Strategic Studies, representatives of the International Institute for Central Asian Studies (IICAS) from the Republic of Uzbekistan, as well as professors and instructors from the Institute who work in this area.
The meeting was moderated by Bekdurdy Amansariyev, Senior Researcher at the Scientific Center for Strategic Studies of the Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan. The Uzbek delegation included Deputy Advisor to the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan on Foreign Policy Issues and Director of the International Institute for Central Asian Studies (IICAS), Mr. Javlon Vakhabov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Uzbekistan to Turkmenistan, Mr. Ravshanbek Alimov, Head of Department at the International Institute for Central Asian Studies, Mr. Daniyar Kurbanov, Researcher Sultanbek Satmuratov, and Specialist at the Embassy of the Republic of Uzbekistan in Turkmenistan, Mr. Jasur Ashurov.
From the Turkmen side, participants included Director of the Scientific Center for Strategic Studies at the Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, Mr. Shiri Shiriyev, Head of the Railway Transport Department of the Turkmen Transport and Logistics Center, Mr. Wepa Yagshyev, Head of the “At Abray” Economic Society, Mr. Serdarmyrat Geldiyev, and senior researchers at the Strategic Research Center, Mr. Allaberdi Niyazov and Mr. Orazmuhammet Annabayev, among others.
The presence of mass media representatives at the round table meeting added special significance, aiming at widely promoting the event to the public.
During the meeting, important issues related to the further development of Turkmen-Uzbek cooperation in political-diplomatic, trade-economic, and cultural-humanitarian spheres were discussed. The participants also exchanged views on key regional and international agenda items, including upcoming events planned within bilateral and multilateral formats. The role of cooperation within regional and international organizations, particularly the United Nations, was also highlighted. Moreover, the participants touched upon the main directions of cultural and humanitarian relations.
Following the round table meeting, a bilateral meeting was held between the delegation led by Mr. Javlon Vakhabov, Deputy Advisor to the President of Uzbekistan and Director of the International Institute of Central Asia, and Ms. Gulshat Yusupova, Rector of the Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan. Mr. Vakhabov emphasized that in recent years, the strategic partnership between Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan has reached a qualitatively new level. Participants of the meeting expressed strong confidence in achieving the set goals.
